"Kids have this innate curiosity, this natural fascination; to see that come alive in the classroom is what makes my job worthwhile. I think as adults, we take for granted that kids want to learn new things and demonstrate what they know. We impose rules and establish structure with the best intentions, but somewhere along the way, those rules and structures inhibit the students' abilities to ask meaningful questions. Teaching STEM is different. STEM champions that curiosity. It takes questions like "am I allowed to do this?" and transforms them into "what will happen when I do this?" When that change in mentality occurs, and I see even my youngest students take ownership of their learning, I feel as empowered as they do."
